Pittsburg, Texas
has a thriving bed and breakfast industry, and it is, in fact, one of the favored types of accommodations in the Piney Woods Region. Historic, old homes in Pittsburg and the surrounding towns are now lovely bed and breakfast inns, furnished with period antiques. The Pecan House is one of the finest Victorian-era bed and breakfasts in Pittsburg. Built at the turn of the 20th century by C. T. Swayse, a local builder, Pecan House has the only twin, wrap-around balconies of its type in the city. An antique shop was located in the house for many years, and then in 1999, an English family purchased the home and turned it into a bed and breakfast inn. Three years of restoration went into the Pecan House, with antiques, furniture and other bric-a-brac items imported from England to be used in it. It is located one block back from Main Street in Pittsburg near antique shops and coffee shops. Many other historic bed and breakfasts can be found in the nearby cities of Nacogdoches, Jefferson, Livingston, Lufkin, Mount Pleasant, Tyler, Beaumont and others.
Other unique lodging in the Pittsburg area includes guest ranches, lodges and resorts. An example is a “castle” in the town of Jacksonville that sits on 27 acres along the shores of Lake Jacksonville. It includes six elaborately decorated bedrooms, three large patios overlooking the lake and it’s just minutes from championship golf courses. Or how about staying at a “bass and breakfast lodge” on Lake Fork (well-known for its excellent fishing) near the town of Alba? Fine facilities are available in this spacious lodge that is situated on five beautifully landscaped waterfront acres. Other guest ranches in the Piney Woods region offer cabins, cottages, camping, RV hook-ups, along with amenities such as restaurants or concession stands, swimming pools, conference rooms, etc.
If you prefer to stay in a more traditional setting, the nearby towns of Beaumont, Mt. Pleasant, Henderson, Huntsville, Jacksonville, Marshall and Texarkana have dozens of hotels and motels, including national chains. Easily recognized names in the industry such as Holiday Inn, Comfort Inn, Best Western, Ramada, Howard Johnson and Econo Lodge are available, along with locally owned hotels and motels. Many of these are conveniently located near the highways and include amenities such as on-site restaurants, swimming pools, Internet access, microwaves, refrigerators, in-room coffee makers, HBO and Pay-Per-View television. Many offer free continental breakfast and USA Today newspaper delivery.
